1990 Chenu-Lefebvre Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières
We have more Chenu today, and this time it's the best wine they make and from one of their top vintages, the 1990 Lavieres, which is a client favorite. While it's been a while since we have been able to offer this wine, the Chenu's are releasing a bit more from their cellar and, in their same fashion, always go through each bottle individually before they are shipped out, dumping the bad ones and recorking everything that's good and topping the wine off with a proper bottle of the same wine and vintage. This gives excellent reassurance when buying something of this age, and of all the Chenu wines we've had over the years, we have never experienced a flawed bottle. While Chenu flies under the radar, the wines are excellent and in perfect condition, showing a wonderful sense of place. Being from Savigny-Les-Beaune,, the wines are classic, with a refined rusticity, are naturally very structured, and have proven to be gems in the cellar. This is an excellent example of that age-ability, and being from a great vintage like 1990 and an excellent premier cru like Les Lavieres only makes it better. This wine is still going strong and offers a fantastic combination we love seeing in older Burgundy: excellent terroir expression, complexity, and a nice dynamic between the still-present fruit and savory components. It is a well-balanced, textbook, aged Burgundy that is one of the best buys for 1990 Premier cru right now, and as we all know, it's not easy to find something in the category with this much age at sub $100 pricing these days. This is ready to drink now and is highly recommended for those who love older Burgundy or older wines in general, but are typically turned off by the pricing.
