2019 Villa di Geggiano Chianti Classico Riserva
Cellar Tracker 94 pts!
2019 Villa di Geggiano Chianti Classico Riserva is a polished, classically Tuscan Sangiovese from one of the historic estates of Castelnuovo Berardenga, just outside Siena. Villa di Geggiano has been home to the Bianchi Bandinelli family for roughly 500 years, with fine wine production documented back to 1725. Today, the estate remains focused on small-production organic farming and traditional Chianti Classico character. This Riserva is 97% Sangiovese with 3% Cabernet Sauvignon from 30-year-old vines planted on clay, silt, sand, and limestone soils, aged for 20 months in mostly 500-liter French oak tonneaux, with a small portion in barrique, then another 10 months in larger French oak botti. The 2019 vintage is the real standout here, with even summer conditions, fresh acidity, ripe tannins, healthy fruit, and excellent aromatic definition, giving the wine depth with elegance. In the glass, it shows dark cherry, red plum, violet, leather, tobacco, dried herbs, spice, and a firm mineral finish. This is a serious Chianti Classico Riserva with the brightness of Sangiovese, the structure for aging, and enough polish and depth to stand comfortably next to far more expensive Tuscan reds.
