2020 Stolo Family Vineyards Syrah Hillside Reserve

2020 Stolo Family Vineyards Syrah Hillside Reserve

We have more of the best Syrah deal we've ever offered after selling out, and it's a fantastic buy from Stolo Winery. This was originally a $50 bottle, but we have it today at less than half the price! The grapes from the 2020 vintage stayed on the vines until late fall, allowing them to gain more hang time and physiologically mature, made possible by the cooler weather resulting from the vineyard's proximity to the coast in Cambria. While the fruit spent extra time on the vine, it's not over-the-top but actually quite classic at only 13% alcohol. This was made when Raj Parr was still settling into the estate, and he made the finishing touches. We have tried this Syrah many times and are happy to report that it shows expressive aromatics of blackberry, crushed herbs, and liquid minerals, while the palate is perfectly balanced with notes of dark plums, mixed berries, white pepper, and a delicious savoriness, and is ready to enjoy now. It's a flat-out steal at this price, and the best buy for Syrah that bridges the gap between old- and new-world palates!

Wine Enthusiast (Matt Kettman) 95 pts! This is always a divisive bottling, pitting cool-climate lovers of earthy funk against those seeking fruitier Syrah and this vintage goes extreme. Aromas of petrol and singed boar hair reflect a gas station vibe in the nose, and the palate keeps the theme alive, bringing a tiny amount of roasted fruit to this raw meat party.
