2021 Guido Porro Barolo Vigna Lazzairasco Eta W/O 5-18-2026
The 2021s from Guido Porro are outstanding, and we have a great example from this traditional Barolo address today at a very sharp price. The 2021 Barolo Vigna Lazzairasco comes from an old 2.5-hectare parcel planted in 1962 and 1963 within the excellent Lazzarito MGA in Serralunga d’Alba, a site known for its calcareous marl soils and for producing structured, deeply mineral, long-lived Nebbiolo. Vietti also makes a wine from Lazzarito that sells for roughly four times the price, making Porro’s version one of the smarter buys from this important cru (Galloni gave Vietti's just a point higher in '21). A fourth-generation family estate established in the early 20th century, Guido Porro continues to work in a traditional style that highlights the character of its historic Serralunga holdings. The 2021 vintage is one of the strongest recent years in Barolo, shaped by a long, even growing season, healthy fruit, warm days, cool nights, and an extended harvest window that allowed Nebbiolo to reach full phenolic ripeness while preserving acidity and aromatic precision. Fermentation occurs in concrete vats and stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts, followed by extended maceration and aging for at least 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks. The result is classic Serralunga Barolo with dark cherry, rose, licorice, iron, spice, firm tannins, and the depth, minerality, and structure to age beautifully. It's a fantastic buy at this price and a great Barolo not to miss this vintage.
Antonio Galloni 94 points! "The 2021 Barolo V. Lazzairasco is redolent of sweet red cherry, chalk, mint, white pepper and blood orange. Brisk acids and beams of supporting tannin give the 2021 its shape and taut, savory profile. Iron, graphite, scorched earth and incense develop later, adding further layers of nuance. I would prefer to cellar this for a few years. (Drink between 2026-2036)"
