2022 Pierre-Marie Chermette Fleurie Les Garants
Domaine Vissoux is as good as ever, and the 2022s are another promising top vintage from this Beaujolais veteran. Led by Pierre-Yves Chermette and his son, Domaine Vissoux produces some of the best values in Beaujolais. Les Grantants takes what we love from Fleurie and the Moulin a Vent and jams them into one bottle. Les Garants is located down in the valley close to the vines of Clos Roiette. This portion of Fleurie is right on the border with Moulin a Vent and was at one point part of the Moulin a Vent Appelation. Drawing on the elegance and finesse of Fleuire with the weight and depth of Moulin a Vent makes for a very compelling wine, and seeing how good the wines from Clos Roilette are this vintage, it's no surprise that this too is also sensational. It's an outstanding vintage for this cuvee and one of the leading examples made by the Chermettes. These are currently the only bottles available in the USA, and the big note from John Gilman confirms it's a top buy for the 2022 vintage.
John Gilman 94 points! "Jean-Étienne Chermette’s 2022 les Garants is a lovely young wine. As I have mentioned before, the vineyard of les Garants lies down in the valley of Fleurie, near the vineyards of Clos de la Roilette, and like those vines, was once part of the Moulin-à-Vent appellation before the redistricting that took place with the official AOC boundaries were set. The wine is raised in ten percent new Burgundy barrels, with the rest raised in foudres. The 2020 les Garants is bright, ripe and sappy on the nose, offering up a beautiful bouquet of black cherries, pomegranate, pigeon, dark soil tones, a touch of raw cocoa, violets and a discreet topnote of fresh thyme. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and beautifully structured this year, with a rock solid core of fruit, lovely soil signature and grip, ripe tannins and a long, complex and beautifully balanced finish. This is first class Fleurie that belies its old Moulin-à-Vent classification, as it has a good foundation of suave tannin and will need a few years in the cellar to start to really drink with generosity.
